LA FORCE DES FEMMES NOIRES, How Rick Owens Surprised with Shape and Diversity in Paris Fashion Week.

Rick Owens, an American designer who lives and works in Paris, where he has establish and develop his worldwide reach minimalistic brand.  His love for neutrals is evident specially Black, Black leather, Black Denim, Black Cotton.  But I remember him because he has an older wife and a very committed relationship that many criticize.  And of course his interview with Zebra Katz for SS2012, where he said he like to make people uncomfortable and loves  pushing the boundaries.

For the new collection SS2013 his show opened with a heartbeat guided music that represented the present moment, our state of mind or the consciousness, if you will. The first model comes out with a "mean" and strong fearless face and the shape of a real woman, we saw the face of what change actually is. A show celebrating women's body.

Diversity in fashion today doesn't not exist, and even if Rick Owens hires American Performers puts them on a plane to Paris to model his collection, we still have a long way to go, if we want change to happen. Many designers only look for exotic black women that looks white or has a familiar face like the black Supermodels, Naomi, Iman. Just like they did in the 50's with Jazz Singers. There has been many boundaries broken in society for equality since then, but fashion,4 the most influential business of all has been hijacked and has no will to change it's ill practices. In the past, we might have seen a few black girls on the line, at most five, like the Zac Posen show in New York Fashion Week in September, where he had 7 colored models which was a great improvement. Fashion is a world business and as a world business it need to be represented by the people of the world.  I hope this is not a fad but I think in the next season we will be back at square one.
